Opportunities for Take Flight Students

Attending events and connecting with current Rice students

Take Flight students can take advantage of a variety of in-person and online events through the Take Flight program. These events provide unique opportunities to explore their interests and connect with the Rice community.

  • Visit the Rice campus for a Take Flight on-campus day that includes student-led tours, attending a Rice class, visiting a residential college, and student research and student life info sessions
  • Participate in online and in-person Q&A sessions and workshops hosted by Rice transfer students. Past online events have included Math Logic Workshops and Pre-Med Advising Information Sessions.
  • Attend academic conferences hosted by Rice, some of which provide access to industry representatives who are recruiting interns.
  • Connect with Take Flight Alumni Ambassador hosts when attending public Rice events on campus.

Enriching summer research and project based experiences

Research and project-based experiences are a key component of any Take Flight student’s journey. The program provides several ways for students to engage in these important experiences.

  • Attend an info session hosted by Rice faculty and students covering the REU application process
  • Apply to participate in paid summer research experiences on Rice’s campus, both full-time summer research experiences (REUs) and short-term summer research experiences (“mini-REUs”)
  • Present research to Rice audiences (limited opportunities and capacity)

Pursuing transfer to Rice

Take Flight students are encouraged to apply for transfer admissions to Rice in addition to other four-year institutions. Special programming is provided to help prepare students for this transition.

  • Attend online information sessions hosted by Rice Admissions and Financial Aid
  • Receive transfer credit for a number of articulated courses between Lone Star College/San Jacinto College and Rice (if admitted to Rice)
  • Take part in a summer transition program (if admitted to Rice)
